Turning Grief into Comfort: The Story of Blankies 4 My Buddies

April 27, 2026
Discover how C.J. Matthews turned personal tragedy into a nationwide mission of comfort by providing blankets and resources to grieving and displaced children.

In South Fulton County, Georgia, a busy school night involves more than just the usual rigors of homework for the Matthews family. Their kitchen serves as the staging ground for a nationwide mission of healing. It is here that items are carefully sorted and prepared for distribution to children facing illness, displacement, or profound loss.

The initiative, known as Blankies 4 My Buddies, was born out of deep personal tragedy. When C.J. Matthews was just five years old, his mother went into premature labor, resulting in the loss of his infant sister. Struggling to process a grief he was too young to fully comprehend, C.J. needed an outlet. When his parents asked what might bring comfort to another child experiencing similar pain, his answer was simple: blankets, because they offer a sense of security.

Today, Blankies for My Buddies collects and donates blankets, books, and food to youth across the country. The organization has grown significantly, earning C.J. recognition as a representative for the Thousand Points of Light, a prestigious volunteerism nonprofit established by President George H.W. Bush. Through his tireless work, C.J. has not only found a path to personal healing but has also provided tangible comfort to countless children navigating their own difficult circumstances.
