36 Years in the Classroom: Dr. Caryn Long, National Teachers Hall of Fame

June 15, 2026
Dr. Caryn Long has taught for 36 years at Montverde Academy and earned a place in the National Teachers Hall of Fame. This is her story.

Thirty-six years is a long time to do anything. For Dr. Caryn Long, it has been long enough to shape generations of students at Montverde Academy, a school situated just northwest of Orlando, Florida—and long enough to earn her a place in the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

Long serves as the director of the Educational Technology and Innovation Center at Montverde, a role that reflects how her approach to education has evolved without losing its core purpose. What still drives her, she says, is the moment a struggling student finally grasps a concept—eyes widening, a smile breaking through. "That's what really excites me," she said. "And the whole reason that I came into this profession."

Those who work alongside her describe a teacher whose impact extends well beyond any single lesson. The legacy of helping students discover themselves, grow, and leave her class as better versions of who they arrived as—repeated across more than three decades—is, by any measure, substantial.

Like many educators, Long traces part of her path back to a teacher who moved her. She points to Christa McAuliffe, the educator and NASA mission specialist who died in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, as a defining inspiration. "Above all, I would say Christa for her bravery, for her inspiration," Long said, "to inspire me and many others, even past that terrible tragedy that day."

The National Teachers Hall of Fame recognition places Long among a small group of educators honored for a lifetime of commitment to the profession—a distinction her colleagues say she has earned many times over.
