Veteran Opens Only Grocery Store in Hurricane Katrina's Hardest-Hit Neighborhood

Burnell Colton's story is a remarkable testimony to human resilience and community spirit. A veteran and former policeman, Burnell witnessed the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which left much of New Orleans, including his neighborhood in the Lower Ninth Ward, in ruins. Despite numerous obstacles and a lack of corporate interest, Burnell realized the urgent need for basic amenities in his community. Determined, he opened the first and only grocery store there, significantly impacting the lives of local residents.
