Jim McLaren's Journey: From Tragedy to Triumph
August 21, 2025
Explore Jim McLaren's journey from adversity to empowerment and how he's improving lives through sports for disabled athletes.
Jim McLaren, once a 300-pound offensive lineman at Yale, faced life-altering adversities that reshaped his path. In 1985, while heading to an acting class in New York on his motorcycle, Jim was struck by a bus, resulting in the loss of his leg and several major injuries. Despite this, he persevered and later became a notable figure in disabled sports. After surviving another severe accident, Jim’s story inspired the creation of a charity focused on providing necessary sports equipment and support to disabled athletes. This charity aids athletes in participating in sports, which are often not covered by insurance as they are considered luxuries. Jim’s resilience and the work of his charity have made impactful contributions towards enabling disabled individuals to pursue sports and athletically compete, enhancing their quality of life and societal inclusion.
