How Points of Light Grew from a White House Initiative to a Global Movement
In 1990, a vision for national service took root in the White House. President George H.W. Bush, drawing from his own military and public service background, sought to recognize the community organizations spread like stars throughout the nation. This initiative, originally designed to honor everyday citizens for their contributions, laid the groundwork for what would become a global movement.
Over the past 36 years, Points of Light has evolved from a daily recognition program into a leading nonpartisan organization dedicated to volunteerism. The nonprofit now operates with 120 affiliate organizations worldwide and collaborates with 154 corporate partners to facilitate large-scale service initiatives, including global days of service.
Beyond organizing corporate social impact programs, the organization addresses pressing societal challenges, such as the growing epidemic of loneliness. By encouraging participation in events like Global Volunteer Month, Points of Light helps individuals build meaningful connections and find purpose through service. To date, the organization has honored over 8,000 individuals with the Daily Point of Light award, maintaining its foundational commitment to recognizing those who dedicate their time to helping others.
