Finding Purpose Through Loss: An Army Veteran's Journey with MS
Arriving in the United States in the spring of 2001, a young immigrant and her mother were just beginning to navigate a new culture when the September 11 attacks shifted the course of their lives. For a middle school student who did not yet speak English, witnessing the nation's response to the tragedy sparked a deep desire to serve. That drive eventually led Anna Cherepnina to enlist in the Army Reserves in 2009, determined to give back to the country that had offered her family a fresh start.
Trained as a mental health specialist, Cherepnina deployed to Afghanistan to help run a combat and operational stress control clinic. Her role required guiding soldiers through the trauma of mass casualty events. Having already endured the devastating loss of a boyfriend to suicide in her early twenties, she drew upon her own grief to connect with service members experiencing suicidal ideation and profound loss. Her time in the military solidified her passion for mental health care, turning her personal pain into a vital resource for her fellow soldiers.
However, her path was marked by further adversity. After returning from her first deployment, she lost another long-term partner in a tragic accident. Then, just three months into her second deployment, she began losing feeling in her legs. A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis forced her into medical retirement, abruptly ending her military career. Despite these compounding hardships, Cherepnina refused to let her story end in despair. Today, she is channeling her experiences into a new form of community healing, developing a photography club designed to help individuals navigating MS and personal loss find connection and peace through the camera lens.
