Community Volunteers Transform Home for Disabled Vietnam-Era Veteran

April 27, 2026
Volunteers from Rebuilding Together Atlanta and Lockheed Martin build a wheelchair ramp to provide safe home access for a disabled veteran and his son.

Thirty miles northwest of Atlanta, a quiet neighborhood in Austell, Georgia, became the staging ground for a focused community effort. Dozens of volunteers from Rebuilding Together Atlanta and Lockheed Martin converged on a single property with a clear mission: to restore accessibility and safety to a family that has given much to their country.

The home belongs to Kenneth Taylor, a 73-year-old disabled veteran and former test pilot who has lived in the residence for over 50 years. Taylor, who served during the Vietnam era, now relies on crutches and serves as the primary caregiver for his 42-year-old son, a fellow veteran who has been bedridden for two years due to severe neuropathy. For months, navigating the steps of their home had been a dangerous, nearly impossible task, preventing them from easily attending medical appointments or safely exiting the house.

Recognizing the critical need, the volunteer coalition spent the day clearing the yard, performing interior repairs, and constructing a brand-new wheelchair ramp. The structural addition fundamentally changes daily life for the Taylor household, allowing Kenneth to safely transport his son to doctors and regain his own mobility. For a veteran who remembers returning home to a country in turmoil, the sudden arrival of volunteers willing to labor on his behalf offered a tangible reminder of community support.
