Shay, a Native American from Bristol, Connecticut, was drafted at 19 and served as a medic during some of World War II's fiercest battles, including Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. His bravery earned him several prestigious military awards, including the Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. Remarkably, he never suffered an injury, even while he was a prisoner of war for a short period. Shay attributes his courage to the inspiration of other heroes who made ultimate sacrifices, underscoring his humble demeanor and profound respect for his fallen comrades.
